A night on the red carpet
as i was on the narrabundah website, i came across this information about the school's social events
.....and here they are:
N-day:
N-Day (Narrabundah Day) is an annual event traditionally held in February on the Thursday of Week 2 at the beginning of the College year.
All staff and students gather at the Cotter or Uriarra East for a day of organised chaos. Activities vary from year to year, ranging from standard recreational pursuits like swimming and volleyball to the more bizarre like jelly wrestling! Although active participation is encouraged, no activity is compulsory and being a spectator can be a very entertaining pastime!
Lunch is provided in the form of a hotdog and drink but it is a good idea to bring some extra sustenance. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable old clothes and sun protection.
Film Night:
Narrabundah College runs all night "movie marathons" as a social event several times a year. Usually they are held early in each unit before the pressure of works gets too heavy. The school, through the Film night organiser, Norm Hughes, hires five movies, generally new releases, selected by vote by the students. The films are shown on a cinemascope screen with an auditorium types projector and sound system. The events are very popular with students.
The nights are great occasions for students and staff to meet as there are half hour breaks between films and the hall canteen which is run by students sells hotdogs, coffee, sweets, and cold drinks. People watch the movies from the floor, in sleeping bags, blankets and general "luxury". Some even manage a nap every so often.
Tickets are $8 pre-bought and $9-10 at the door.
Health Fair:
The college holds a health fair in the early part of each year. It is a festive, fun event held over lunchtime with healthy food and entertainment plus stalls for students to visit for information, pamphlets, advice and resources about all kinds of health matters. It is a non-didactic way of reaching many students with a wide range of health materials, skills, advice and contacts. Over forty different health related community organisations participate in the event including first aid, dental health, drug and alcohol services, family planning, fitness testing, stress management, Community Aid Abroad for a global perspective, diabetes, epilepsy, mental health, asthma, nutrition, housing, migrant resources and more.
Themes of past fairs include "Good Healthstock" a seventies theme modelled on Woodstock but focussing on taking stock of your health choices; "It’s my party and I’ll be healthy ‘cause I want to" with a focus on going out safe and "Keeping a Balance" with a circus theme and the message of keeping a sense of balance in your life.
Students are encouraged to participate in the fair organisation and student bands, performers and designers have helped to create the festival atmosphere. Apart from the benefits of disseminating information to students and raising awareness, the fair is a celebration of the college as a site that values health and provides a non-judgemental caring environment where students can feel safe, become better informed and know where they can get help and advice in the community.
United Nations Day:
UN (United Nations) Day is an annual event held in October on the Thursday nearest to United Nations Day. Many people consider this to be 'the best' day of the year at Narrabundah - it is certainly the most colorful!
The college celebrates UN Day with an International Food Fair and entertainment in the College quadrangle. Entertainment is led by the LOTE and Music department and all faculties organise the Food Fair. A display of flags from countries who are members of the United Nations is a feature of UN Day.
Students of Narrabundah College come from many different nations and this is a chance to enjoy their cultural diversity. United Nations Day is seen as an excellent way to remind students of the ideas of peace and harmony that the United Nations has striven to foster.
Profits from this day are always used to support educational projects for needy overseas students.
